What is controller deadzone?

Deadzone is the small center area where tiny analog stick movement is ignored so idle noise does not trigger walking, aiming, or camera movement.

How to choose a deadzone value

Start low, then increase only enough to keep the stick stable at rest. The best value is usually the smallest number that prevents unwanted movement.

Deadzone vs stick drift

Deadzone is a software buffer. Stick drift is the hardware symptom. A larger deadzone can hide mild drift, but it does not repair the controller itself.

Why the recommended range matters

Most healthy controllers feel responsive around 0.05 to 0.12. If you need much more than that, the stick may already have noticeable wear.

What does “Too sensitive” mean?

It means the deadzone is so small that even minor idle stick noise may still leak through and feel like drift in games.

What does “Too high” mean?

It means the deadzone is large enough that subtle input near center may be ignored, which can make aiming or fine movement feel less precise.

Should both sticks use the same deadzone?

Often yes, but some games let you tune them separately. If one stick is worn more than the other, asymmetric deadzones can make sense.

Why reset the sample on a deadzone page?

Resetting the peak drift sample gives you a cleaner baseline before comparing the current threshold against fresh idle readings.
